In May, everyone in the motoring world lost a friend, colleague and a hero in the brilliant Carroll Shelby and a one-off Ford Shelby GT500 has been honoured in his name as a fitting tribute.
The unique example will also be used to mark the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra and will sport an insane 850bhp thanks to the group of friends close to Shelby himself in Ford Motor Company, Ford Racing, Shelby American and others.
It will harness the latest-spec GT500 Cobra as a starting point and of course will be powered with an all-American V8 coupled with a Whipple supercharger, just for good measure. The paintwork will be heavily influenced by Cobras of the past that were often graced in Guardsman Blue, combined with the Wimbledon White stripes down the middle of the body.
Shelby American’s contribution will be the bonnet made just for this model, the rear widebody kit and the brakes. The special GT500 will run on 20in alloys and have 13in wide tyres at the rear.
A host of Shelby’s friends unveiled the car, including a former employee of his and now Ford Motor Company board member, Edsel Ford II. Also in attendance were Ford group sales chief Jim Farley, and Shelby American president John Luft at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
