What does an EGR valve do?

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation, and the valve acts as an emission control device integrated into internal combustion engines. An EGR valve’s primary purpose is to reduce the formation of harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. 

NOx emissions are a result of high combustion temperatures that occur in the engine’s cylinders, which can contribute to air pollution and smog formation.

The EGR valve operates by redirecting a portion of the exhaust gasses back into the engine’s combustion chambers. By doing so, it dilutes the oxygen content within the cylinder, lowering the combustion temperature, and subsequently minimizing the production of NOx emissions. 

This process also plays an important part towards improving fuel efficiency, reducing engine knocking, and enhancing overall engine longevity.

Bad EGR valve symptoms

A faulty EGR valve can be evident in various ways – here are some common signs to watch out for:

Check Engine Light – One of the most obvious signs of an EGR valve issue is the illumination of the check engine light on your dashboard. Modern vehicles are equipped with onboard diagnostics systems that detect anomalies in various components, including the EGR valve.

Rough Idle – If your car exhibits a shaky or irregular idle when the engine is running at a standstill, it could be indicative of an EGR valve problem. The improper recirculation of exhaust gasses can disrupt the engine’s stability at idle.

Reduced Fuel Efficiency – A faulty EGR valve can lead to poor fuel efficiency as the combustion process becomes less efficient due to improper recirculation of exhaust gasses.

Increased Emissions – If your car fails an emissions test or produces visible smoke from the exhaust, it might be due to the EGR valve not functioning properly, resulting in higher emissions.

Engine Performance Issues – Sluggish acceleration, lack of power, and even engine stalling can be attributed to a malfunctioning EGR valve. These issues arise from improper air-fuel mixture ratios caused by faulty exhaust gas recirculation.

Can a bad EGR valve cause a misfire?

It certainly can – there are a few factors that can contribute towards engine misfires, and the EGR valve being potentially faulty is one of them to look at.

This can usually be down to improper combustion, with the EGR valve controlling the flow of exhaust gasses back into the engine’s combustion chamber. If the EGR valve is stuck open or closed, a disruption to the proper air-fuel mix will lead to misfires.

Excessive carbon deposits can also lead to misfires, as the airflow gets disrupted within the combustion chamber, as well as it causing bad fuel distribution, due to this build up in the likes of the intake manifold, cylinders and other valves.

Damage caused by a faulty EGR valve

If a faulty EGR valve is left to its devices, this can lead to several adverse effects for your vehicle:

Engine Deposits – A malfunctioning EGR valve can cause carbon deposits to accumulate within the intake manifold, cylinders, and valves. This buildup can impede airflow, decrease engine performance, and potentially lead to more severe issues over time.

Reduced Longevity – An improperly functioning EGR valve can cause the engine to run hotter than intended. Over time, this excess heat can contribute to premature wear and tear on engine components, reducing the engine’s lifespan.

Catalytic Converter Damage – Excessive NOx emissions resulting from a faulty EGR valve can damage the catalytic converter – a crucial component responsible for converting harmful gasses into less harmful substances. Replacing a catalytic converter can be an expensive repair.

Increased Maintenance Costs – Ignoring EGR valve issues can lead to a domino effect, where other engine components become strained and susceptible to damage. This can result in a cascading series of repairs and increased maintenance costs.


As such a vital component in the engine bay, the EGR valve is something you’ll want to ensure is in good shape for your whole tenure with a vehicle.
